Otterhounds were first bred to hunt otters, the overpopulation of which once limited the supply of trout for fishermen in Great Britain. Otterhounds can swim for hours without rest. The title Master of Otterhounds has been bestowed on a number of English monarchs. Otterhounds have become quite rare due to the decline in numbers of otters. There are only about 1,000 Otterhounds in the world.
